What a crazy start to our 2017-2018 school year!

School started a day later due to crazy weather damaging our school and town.
Despite this unusual start to the new school year we had a great first day!
I'd like to say welcome to my new class of students and their families. I'm looking forward to a wonderful school year full of adventures and learning! :-)

To add to the craziness of the day we had no wifi, no phones, and two assemblies scheduled.
Can we say, Wow!
Even with all the wild things going on we still found time to sing, dance, play, and make new friends.

May STEM project

For the May late start STEM project our class did the Paper Chain Challenge. Students were in pairs, and provided with 2 pieces of construction paper, 2 pairs of scissors, and one 15 inch piece of masking tape. With these supplies they were to keep working on their paper chain until they ran out of supplies. Before we began each group had 5 minutes to plan their strategy. Then it took them about 40 minutes to build their chains. We had amazing results from this simple paper chain STEM challenge. The kids did a wonderful job of working together!

Here are a few pictures from our 5 minutes of strategy planning. As you can see some of them really got into their planning.

Next the cutting and building began.

Then the chains began to take shape.

Here are our amazing results!

Here are the results listed in inches.
Purple 210 in.
Red 155 in.
Lt. Blue 126 in.
Orange 90 in.
Pink 89 in.
Blue 81 in.
Our class did a wonderful job of managing their supplies so that they could make the longest chains possible. It was an amazing example of team work and creativity!
I think this was our best STEM project this year. :-)

Botanica Pictures

Here are some pictures we took at our Wichita Botanica field trip. The kids really loved the gardens and ponds. We even got to feed the koi fish in one of the ponds. The students are amazed that there are so many cool things that you can see and do in Wichita.
