Botanica Pictures

Here are some pictures we took at our Wichita Botanica field trip. The kids really loved the gardens and ponds. We even got to feed the koi fish in one of the ponds. The students are amazed that there are so many cool things that you can see and do in Wichita.

Eggcellent Egg Riddles

Since we have been studying animals and it's almost Easter we wrote some riddles for animals that hatch from eggs. Each student selected an animal and wrote 5-6 clues about their animal. Then they decorated a front cover to look like an Easter Egg and drew a picture of their answer on the back cover. Finally we stuck the riddle in the middle and tied it off with a bow and hung them in our hallway for all to enjoy.

April STEM

For our April STEM project we did two activities a plastic egg stacking challenge and a whole class experiment. For our egg stacking challenge students were divided into 3 teams each team was given 100 plastic eggs. Then the teams had to stack the stack the plastic egg halves to see who could build the tallest tower. All of the students thought this would be our easiest STEM challenge yet. They were proven wrong once we started. Keeping the eggs from shifting and teammates from bumping the growing towers proved to be more difficult then originally thought. Each team was given 3 attempts at building their towers. We ended with the following heights 13in, 12in, and 6in towers.
As a whole class we predict which of three liquids would dissolve a Peep's marshmallow bunny quicker. The predictions were water-2, pop-7, and vinegar-8. Mrs. Mills, Mr. Hoyt, and myself also joined in on the predicting. It took us 3 days of soaking before we had a clear winner. And, our winner was VINEGAR! Though we found that pop was very good too, which is why it took us three days before we could declare the winner.

As I mentioned above vinegar was the winner in both the predictions and the actual experiment.
Unfortunately I forgot to take a photo of our final results. I can tell you that the vinegar bunny was the mushiest and his ears had started to completely disappear.
