Newsletter January 30, 2016

100th Day of School

Friday the 27th was the 100th day of school. First grade students brought displays of 100 items to share with all three classrooms. After lunch students toured through each class looking at the different displays. Students also made silly 100th day hats and Fruitloop necklaces to wear. All Marshall students were invited to dress in a 100th day shirts or as if they were 100 years old.

January Late Start STEM Day

Our theme for this months Late Start STEM project was snowflakes. We watched a video on how snowflakes are formed and also one about a scientist that photographs snowflakes all over the world. Then each student created their own snowflake out of pipe cleaners. We used these pipe cleaner snowflakes as a framework on which to grow borax crystals. While Mrs. Jones and I hung the snowflakes in jars students drew and colored a tree with white snowflakes around it. After coloring they used watercolors to paint the sky. The crayon resisted the watercolors allowing the white snowflakes to show through. How neat is that! On Friday the snowflake crystals were done forming and we were able to take them home.

Newsletter January 9, 2017

After printing the newsletter I noticed that I made a mistake in the math section. I flipped this weeks and next weeks math. We are doing skip counting with 2's, 5's, and 10's this week and place value will be next week. To save on ink I didn't reprint it, but I did fix it on the digital copy. The rest of your newsletter is correct. Sorry for any inconvenience!

Our first week of the New Year

We had a great first week back after Christmas break. In science we learned about penguins. We read nonfictions about them and then made our own All About Penguins booklet. Then in writing we did a short New Year's Resolution writing activity on cute sock paper.

December seemed to fly by so fast! Here are a few more pictures of things we did.
Professor Gizmo came to visit and showed us some neat science tricks.

The first graders did a wonderful job of singing and dancing at the music program.

The whole building joined together to sing Christmas songs at our annual Marshall Sing Along.

We made 80th day Santa's for our Zero My Hero Craft book.
