Studying apples

The last week of September was our apple science unit. We tasted 3 colors of apple and voted on which one we liked the best. We also read books about apple orchards and Johnny Appleseed. Then  we learned about the apple lifecycle and made both an apple lifecycle wheel and an apple lifecycle mobile. At the end of the week we finished our unit up by doing some apple experiments. We made predictions about the following questions.

  • Will an apple sink or float?
  • Will half of an apple sink or float?
  • Will an apple stem float?
  • Will apple seeds float?
  • Which liquid do you think will keep an apple from turning brown: water, milk, soda, or lemon juice?
We learned that apples, apple halves, and stems all float but that the seeds do not.
We also learned that lemon juice does the best job at keeping apples from turning brown. Though Mist Twist and milk did a pretty good job too.

We tasted 3 colors of apples and voted on which one we liked the best.
Students made an apple lifecycle mobile which we hung up in the hall way.
These were our predictions on which liquid would keep an apple from turning brown. As you can see most students predicted that water would do the best and only one student chose lemon juice.

This was our experiment.

Students stood if they thought the item would float and knelt if they thought it would sink.

After watching the first three items float most students
were surprised to see the seeds sink.
